10:48 am - Sheer Genius
I'm learning to use a new program. It has a button that has an image of a hammer hitting a monitor on it. The tooltip that pops up when you hover over it says "Click here when frustrated." It does not appear to do anything, but it makes me feel better anyways.

10:41 pm - Its been a long time...
I havent been updating recently, as nothing really momentus has happened in a while. In recent news, though, I'm now officially double majoring in IOE and CS. I'll also be in town this summer helping do research on social networking and hopefully working as tech support in the ISR. I'm also working on a second game with stefan which will soon have a preliminary website up for you all to have a look at.

Life has been really busy of late, but also very good.

11:29 am - Just for fun...
I was bored, so I wrote a brief article. Over the next 6 months, I'll be playing with some input devices for this, so I would appreciate any comments regarding that in particular.

With the push to get more and more web interoperability on mobile phones and the extension of blackberry networks, the truly portable computer will lauch itself from the niches for these two products and laptops. Three major issues need to be resolved before the powerful, wearable, wireless computer becomes an easily affordable reality.

I. Portable, easy to use input devices

There are three possibilities here:

PDA style stylus input devices will become more and more popular and easy to use. The major issue with this kind of input is that is requires a surface to write on, which will be all right until the screen becomes holographic or a set of glasses.

Voice operated computers are a simple extension of our current voice recognition technologies and cell phone voice recognition abilities. This could become a very quickly growing market, but I would hope that this kind of technology would be kept out of public spaces and reserved for situations where the user is unable to to use their hands (such as embedded navigation computers in cars).

The third, and, in my opinion, most likely input model will be an easily portable keyboard. Current keyboard models have been limited by their flat design and requirement for some kind of surface to hold it. There are chorded input devices (http://www.handykey.com/) that combine keyboard and mouse, which are ideal for this kind of input. The largest issue concerning these devices is the apprehension over the assumed steep learning curve, which is not the case. There is another device similar to this that required two hands and is much closer to the qwerty layout to reduce the learning curve to a couple of hours to become competent (http://www.alphagrips.com/).

II. Introduction of a low cost monitor solution

We currently have small scale LCD screens that we are using in portable devices such as phones and blackberries. This technology will be the first one used in these powerful, portable computers, but there will be major setbacks with this method as the weight of a comfortably large screen will be prohibitive. In order for portable computers to become a resonable alternative to a laptop or desktop, we need them to be as easy to interface with as current computers. This means we either need ultralight LCD monitors or a solution where the screen size is not limited to the case, which brings us to LCD glasses.

Current wearable LCD glasses are very expensive, though very well designed. For a real market for portable computers, the prices must come down from their current price of around $500. There could also be improvements in style, but I don't see this as being a major setback.

There is also the possibility of the introduction of a portable holographic display device, but this will be a high cost alternative for some time.

III. True wireless anywhere

Current cell phone service is patchy and low quality. The US cell phone companies would need to launch satellites similar to the setup currently in use in the UK. This will increase cell phone costs for some time, but with reduced reliance on wired networks, users could reduce or eliminate usage of cable and DSL.

The input problem will most likely be solved within the next five years, as all of the technology is out there, and users will slowly gravitate away from the current laptop/desktop options. In my estimate, in two years, we will have solved the wireless problem and there will be a niche market for high powered executives in truly portable computers, which will blossom withing a year of that to a high end user market and within 5 years we will see laptops becoming obsolete and home computers being set up with with thin client access from portable computers.

02:07 pm - the first real semester is over
This semester kicked my ass. Classes were hard, I had trouble adjusting to the student lifestyle again, and I am, as usual, nearly broke. Next semester will either be much easier or much harder, depending on wether or not I take a senior design course or not. I learned a lot, though. I can do a lot of things with corporate taxes and problem modeling that were interesting, and I feel like an expert on radiation shielding and the complications of building things on the moon.

I've also had a lot of fun. I met whole bunch of new people and living at the house has been fun. This break has been going well, now that its break. I had finals up through the thursday before Christmas, so I still haven't quite relaxed yet.

I miss colorado. I miss the feeling you get when you tilt your foot just so in your ski boot to get those perfect, graceful turns. And the fun of ordering twice as much food as I can eat, and then finishing it all, and the rest of Janice's food. And drive through at starbucks. And illegal poker clubs. And watching the little man as he begins to wander this bright and interesting world.

Break should be good, and if I haven't tried to arrange some time to hang out with you yet, call me. I miss you.

07:54 pm - BLEACH!!
This evening went incredibly well. I started out my day with some work on getting AEther to compile on windows (there are some reserved variable names that we've used and I cant get the BLAS to compile properly yet for those of you who care.) I then had lunch with my dad and we talked about school and work and family stuff. Amers also has delicious sandwiches. After that, I went to Borders (my local bookshelf) and read two books. Good books...where by good I really mean fantasy novels.

On my way out, I saw Professor Renno (my Lunar Base project prof.) with a young boy I can only assume is his grandchild. The image of a wise and smiling grandfather with his exuberant grandson left me with an image that left me grinning and crying on my way home. The other half of my brain commented that having a son brought the color back into the world for her. After this evening, I think I have some glimmering of what she meant, and it is truly extrordinary. I'm now stuck in a great mood, and I'm looking forward to studying for my test tomorrow and seeing you all this coming week.

Sometimes, life just drives me crazy. I went to a great party and met a great woman who was forward enough to drag me back to my place. And now that shes gone, all I have left are the momories of a disappointing evening and a pair of socks, size 6. Normally, it doesn't bother me too much when a one night stand goes horribly awry, but this could have been so much more, and it seems there was nothing I could change. Sigh...

02:43 am - midterms already
Things are going fairly well. School is a lot of work and fun, meeting lots of new people in class. I just got home from a really interesting night of hanging out with Adam and Stefan, and meeting Beth at this really cool flat over wazoo records where there was singing and pizza. I find myself missing all of you who arent near enough to hug. I miss hugs in general and dont get nearly enough, but such is life.

10:28 pm - An update, for once in forever
I'm not really sure what to put here. I keep putting this off, cause I'm not sure how to articulate whats been going on in Marshall land recently. I'm doing extremely well academically this semester. I love all of my classes except math, and we have yet to cover material I haven't already learned in 7th grade there, so its kind of nice. I'm taking stat&prob, econ. decision making and ergonomics for Industrial Engineers and I'm in an independent study with Alexis and some others where we hopefully get to do conceptual design on the first base on the moon.

Socially, I'm doing middling to poor. I dont really feel like meeting people right now, and I know I will regret not doing that now, when people are more interested in finding interesting people in their classes rather than later in the semester. I'm glad I'm living with awesome peoples this year (Alex, Ariela, Alexis and Stefan), though there are the occasional rough evenings. All in all, its been really great at 411 N Ingalls.

I'm single again, which is probly as it should be. I spend most of my time watching anime or programming AEther. Adam and I have embarked on an epic feat that will take most of two year to complete, which is a complete review of all good anime of the last 30 years, with a few classic, not so good things thrown in. It looks like we have at least 750 hours of anime to watch at this point, at the list is probably about 70% complete. We're watching them mostly in chronological order, though a few things need to be savored separately (we'll have a Miyazake weekend, for example).

Programming is really fun. I think my next project, after I track down a bug in my keyboard input code, will be to take a look at .obj files and dealing with 3D anti aliasing. We have almost reached our first prototype phase (AEsteroids over a network). This project looks more and more viable the more we code. I think we will be able to have some kind of product worth marketing and trying to get venture capital for within a year.

I go through a lot of daily ups and downs, but I'm generally having a good year.

11:44 pm - I'm not dead yet!
Hi all you crazy peoples. I've been out of touch here for a while so I thought I'd catch you up breifly. I've had a great summer working for Katherines catering as a delivery boy and working on a video game (AEther: http://www.infinitelyimprobable.net). Also, seeing friends and such. I'm currently all stressed out about house stuff, but it looks like I'll be done worrying soon. Classes this year look great (I finally declared IOE as my major) and I'm particularly excited about my Ergonomics class. This is the first time in as long as I can remember that I am actually looking forward to homework.

I havent been blowing much glass this summer, but its mostly because Q and I havent had very compatible schedules. I do have a few nice pieces, which I will probably be selling to various random and interested parties soon. I think I should make some cups for the house next year, but I'm not sure I can get the motivation together.

I'll be moving in with Alex, Alexis, Ariela and Stefan in a few weeks. I'm also going to have to get all of my books and school supplies together soon. Going back to a regular schedule willbe a little weird. i'll also be doing a lot of cooking this year.

I'm having a great time in general, in spite of the little bits of drama that have, as usual, made it a little harder to get people together. There are a few of you out there that I havent seen, and if I dont get around to it, its not cause I dont wanna see you, its cause I'm really busy.

I'm out.

10:31 am - Leaving soon
My last few days out here have been rather busy. I'll be leaving sometime tomorrow.

We had a really fun dinner lst night. Discussions included trips to China, cars, drugs, dancing and bathing. My favorite story was that one of my friends out here, back when she was my age, had bought one of those large steel tool chests on wheels that have about 20 really thin drawers. She then put lines of coke in each drawer and had a huge party wheeling this around to interested guests. We also ate some food.

I'm really going to miss things out here. Like ordering ridiculous amounts of food, having crazy dogs that sleep with you, my little quasi-family and the energetic poker player and his extremely cute french girlfriend. And watching the sun rise over mountains. And skiing. And the other half of my brain.

I can't wait to get home, though, 'cause it still is home.

I made salmon whitesauce over green fettucini for dinner tonight. This is the first time I have ever been able to make the sauce properly, and I think it should be remembered.

10:55 pm - leaving soon
I moved out of my apartment today. It was a little rushed and impulsive. I don't really know when/if I need to be home for this Greenfield Village thing, but as much as I enjoy being out here and hanging out wiht Janice and Bruce, I really want to be home soon.

I keep remembering a certain large bush in the Botannical gardens wherever it is. The one my parents used to take us to when we were younger. The one with the really dry desert room and miles and miles of interesting trails to hike. The one where we used to play poo sticks at.

The snow they got a few days ago is melting in Denver. Outside, its like a myriad of tiny streams are making delightful music and getting my feet wet. Now, though, I'm warming up with Cosmo and Lottie. My monitors are taped together and lying on the table next to me, and I haven't yet brought my computer in. The desk isn't freezing like it usually is.

All in all, it has been a very interesting day, complete with a guy with a purple mohawk and his REALLY hot girlfriend staring at me for a while as I move things from my room to my car. I feel a little bad, though, cause I know the cat crew could really use people this very last weekend, but I don't think I'm up for it.

11:31 am - Thank god
It seems the University of Michigan has decided I'm good enough to keep taking classes. Now I have nothing left to worry about for the next year, though Ido still have planning and meetings and class arrangements to make. Now I have to take care of summer jobs stuff (glassblowing at Greenfield Village, I hope) and packing up here. My estimated arrival date in Ann Arbor is currently May 5th, though this is bound to change.

Its been really interesting spending a lot of time with parents of a two year old. Things like pooping take on a whole new importance and...joy in life. Bruce commented that when your child using the toilette is not only something very helpful in your daily life, but that you take great joy in it and tell people about it, you are ready to be a parent. I suppose its helpful, but you only know after you have a child.

I really miss all you peoples back at home. And all you peoples out and about, too.
